Overview

The Finance & Accounting Intern will support the Finance and Accounting teams with daily operational, reporting, and analytical activities. This internship provides hands-on exposure to core accounting and finance functions within a banking environment, including general ledger reconciliations, accounts payable, forecasting support, and enterprise risk management reporting. The intern will rotate across areas of the accounting team and assist with special projects while gaining a practical understanding of Bank systems, controls, and cross‑departmental financial processes. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented student interested in accounting, finance, or financial operations. BankNewport’s Summer Internship Program will run June 1, 2026 – August 14, 2026 and will be located onsite in Middletown, RI. Actively participate in the BankNewport Summer Internship Program by assisting the department with various duties and tasks. At the culmination of the internship, the intern will create a final presentation to showcase the skills and knowledge acquired through the program.

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily general ledger account reconciliations to gain understanding of Bank systems and third-party relationships
  • Participate in scheduled job rotations with other areas of the Accounting team
  • Assist the Assistant Controller and Accounting team members with special projects as needed
  • Support aspects of the accounts payable process, including invoice entry, scanning documentation, and updating vendor information
  • Participate in the periodic forecasting process, including partnering with departments to gather and validate modeling assumptions
  • Assist with data management and reporting associated with the Bank’s ERM system (Axiom)
  • Support accurate recordkeeping in accordance with internal controls, policies, and procedures
  • Perform additional administrative and finance-related tasks as assigned

 

OTHER ACCOUNTABILITIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs related and unrelated duties as may be required.

Qualifications

 

  • Strong attention to detail and analytical skills
  • Basic understanding of accounting principles and financial statements preferred
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to handle confidential financial information with professionalism
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Willingness to learn and work collaboratively in a team environment
  • High School Diploma/GED Equivalent
  • Currently pursuing a degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, Economics, or a related field

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

 

SUPERVISORY SCOPE:

No supervisory responsibility

 

INDEPENDENT ACTION:

  • Performs work within established guidelines and according to specific procedures. 
  • Generally refers specific problems to manager where clarification of policies and procedures is needed.
